The Botanicast

A show about nature, culture, and history in the Blue Ridge Mountains

The Botanicast is a naturalist nerd’s creative outlet, an independent weekly audiovisual publication celebrating the nature, culture, and history of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It combines botanical art, spoken word, and social media to promote the region and elevate topics of native ecological interest.

Each week starts with a native plant species, from which stems a scripted, audio-rich podcast episode and an associated botanical illustration in watercolor. Each 20-25 minute episode will feature a mixture of topical and evergreen stories that piece together elements of nature, culture, and history, written and read in poetic prose and interspersed with clips of music licensed from independent artists. The first fifty associated original paintings will be distributed among the show’s financial backers; if you would like to support the show, you can sign up on our Kickstarter campaign page.

Every facet of the Botanicast project reflects delight in observing and understanding the natural world around us. Each week the show wanders through intellectual landscapes, sampling many views and highlighting the place of a particular native species. And each week, that species receives particular attention through illustration, here on the site.

The Botanicast is recorded at Johnson Point, a private 250-acre homestead, garden, and natural reserve near Blacksburg, Virginia.
